Sustainability

I've been reading a lot lately about "sustainability", and how we have to organize societies and economic systems that are "sustainable". The fact is, we DON'T KNOW what's sustainable. To know that requires omniscience. So what the "sustainability" advocates are really recommending is some form of stasis. But stasis is impossible as long as there are human beings with thoughts, motivations, desires, goals, plans, ideas, and creativity. Do "they" expect to stifle and eliminate all of these? It seems to me that there is of necessity a large element of control implied--a totalitarian level of control. And then the question becomes, who controls whom? Obviously, the advocates of this "sustainability" idea expect to be the controllers.
